‘American Woman:’ Alicia Silverstone Returns
The 1995 movie, Clueless, has become a cult classic with its message of female empowerment and friendship— influencing modern day pop culture movies and female friendships, such as Mean Girls. Alicia Silverstone, who played Cher, has been in and out of the entertainment world after the success of Clueless. Silverstone has been featured in movies, such as Batman & Robin (1997), Blast from the Past (1999) with Brendan Fraser, and several other movies in the mid-2000s that never really reached the success and attention that Clueless accomplished. More recently she has resurfaced with notable roles, such as her role in Yorgos Lanthimos’ 2017 film, Killing of a Sacred Deer, and her new leading role in American Woman. Silverstone, since her announcement with American Woman, has been reaching headlines more than before. The New York Times even wrote a feature on her since her years from Clueless to now with the new television series.
The American Woman, which has been picked up by Paramount Network, is based off co-executive producer Kyle Richards’ (Real Housewives of Beverly Hills) mother. She states in an interview that American Woman is a “love letter to my mom.” Alicia Silverstone stars in American Woman, Silverstone’s first television series, as Bonnie Nolan and is set in the 1970s during the wake of the sexual revolution and second-wave feminism. Bonnie Nolan’s life takes a turn when she leaves her cheating husband to raise her two daughters on her own. She and her best friends, Kathleen (Mena Suavri) and Diana (Jennifer Bartels), embark on a journey of independence and empowerment as they battle against the wavering social and gender structures of the 70s.
Considering the synopsis of the American Woman, Alicia Silverstone is perfect for the role. She, being the icon for the so-called “feminist masterpiece” in Clueless, will certainly up the marketing for American Woman. The series was originally developed for TV Land until it was moved in March to Spike TV. Spike TV has been recently rebranded under Paramount Network, which launched in early January of this year. Lip Sync Battle, being one of the more popular and most viewed shows, was premiered live during Paramount’s launch. In fact, Silverstone even performed on the show Lip Sync Battle wearing her iconic Cher outfit from Clueless to further promote the network and American Woman.
With Alicia Silverstone being the face for American Woman, the new comedy-drama will certainly, and hopefully, endure the quirky characteristics and charm that Silverstone brings. While the series will be a biopic of sorts for Kyle Richards’ mother, American Woman (being set in the 70s) will hopefully reignite the charged activism in today’s society, and retell the stories of the movements in that era that still maintain relevance today.
Silverstone returning with American Woman will be premiered on June 7th on Spike, and every Thursday at 10PM.
