The Drop – The Weeknd, Chromeo, Chvrches, & Awolnation
The Drop is us cutting through the massive jungle of new music that’s been released over the last seven days. We sharpen our proverbial machetes and cut through the shit to get you to the content that you need to be listening to.
This is The Drop.
The Weeknd & Kendrick Lamar -“Pray For Me”
Another released track from the Black Panther soundtrack comes with The Weeknd intertwined in its beat. His spacy vocals and Kendrick’s flow make the superhero influenced track so likable. The steady beat and euphoric tones allow this song to be on repeat.
Justin Timberlake – “Breeze Off The Pond”
Between his newest album, Man of The Woods, to his Superbowl performance, Justin Timberlake had himself quite the weekend. The album itself goes through many different lanes of music where every song is telling a very different story. “Breeze Off the Pond” is an automatic standout for me with its eclectic sound and wavy lyrics; it’s fun, upbeat, and has the touch of Pharell Williams written all over it.
Slushii & Marshmello – “There x2”
Candy coated drops and early ’00 alternative vocals, make this one hard to not love. Slushii and Marshmello are quite the dynamic duo when it comes to the music they drop together. Fun, lighthearted, and exactly what I expect the two DJs to release. You definitely can’t go wrong with music from these guys.
CHVRCHES – “Get Out”
I am a huge CHVRCHES fan, and I am so stoked to see them releasing music again. It’s been two years since we have heard from the Scottish indie/pop group, and I am front and center stage for it. I have missed Lauren Mayberry’s innocent style of vocals, and they certainly shine on their latest track, “Get Out,” which is the first glimpse of their upcoming album (the release date is still unknown).
Chromeo & The-Dream – “Bedroom Calling”
Chromeo brought back one of my favorite artists from the early 2000s, and I was completely unprepared for it. Chromeo forever brings the funk and when you pair it with The-Dream’s fun and flirty lyrics, the whole room will be dancing along to this one. Chromeo is making their way back into the charts for 2018 with more releases to come, while gearing up for their upcoming album. If you want to be in an automatic good mood, “Bedroom Calling” is the go-to track.
AWOLNATION -“Miracle Man”
Awolnation just released their third album, Here Come the Runts, and it brings out all of the alternative rock stops. “Miracle Man” is this upbeat, fast-paced track that really showcases the entirety of the album. It is jam packed with lyrics and a heavy guitar riff; this track is absolutely one of my favorite songs off of their new album. My other favorites are “Jealous Buffoon” and “Passion.”
Peking Duk – “Wasted”
Peking Duk is another group that I just love because they are carefree and everything your playlist needs. “Wasted” is the song to sing along to on that long drive home before the weekend starts. Lively drops and catchy synths, this song is just the jam.
Ookay – “Cool”
Ookay’s newest release is completely fitting to its title. “Cool” has an exceedingly cooler drop; it’s funk that meets colorful trap where you can headbang and groove along to all at once.
Tyne – “I’d Like That”
Simple vocals and even simpler acoustics, this song is a pure mantra for a love song. Tyne’s innocent and airy tones bring the lyrics to new heights. This dream pop vocalist is on her way to the top, and a definite indie artist to watch.
Keys N Krates & Tory Lanez – “Music To My Ears”
Not the typical Keys N Krates song I am used to hearing, but it is a nice change from their hard-hitting style. Tory Lanez flows with ease over the wavy beat, which is a perfect easy listening track for the weekends to come.
Cloves – “Bringing The House Down”
If I could combine Lana Del Rey and Amy Winehouse, that is where I would put Cloves. Her newest track is the first release from her upcoming album that is said to be released in June. The song talks about a lackluster relationship and her attempt to be released from it. The vocals are full of soul and jazzy undertones. She is one of the most interesting sounding artists currently making music, and I am excited to see her future releases in 2018.
Slander & Say My Name – “I Can’t Escape”
Rounding out The Drop with an ultimate hype song titled “I Can’t Escape.” This is without a doubt going to be a track that makes its way into every DJ set to come. Slander and Say My Name are not messing around on this track with Feli Ferrao on vocals. Grimy drops and nasty synths, there are zero let ups in this track.
