Hollywould: Joker, Kanye West, and ‘Captain Marvel’
The film and television business moves at a mile a minute, so keeping up with the latest news can be a little daunting. Not to worry—we have your back. In Hollywould, we’ll round up the industry developments you need to know. Here’s what you may have missed:
First Look at Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker
Director Todd Phillips shared a look at Joaquin Phoenix as “Arthur,” the man who’ll eventually become the Joker. It’s a stark contrast to Jared Leto’s appearance in Suicide Squad. (Thank God.) The picture also possibly confirms a rumor reported by That Hashtag Show that Phoenix’s character will begin as Arthur Fleck, a man who returns home to Gotham City to take care of his sick mother.
Kanye Goes Hollywood
According to Hypebeast, Kanye West is looking to expand into the film industry. Documents show that West filed papers last month for Half Beast, LLC; if it materializes, the company will produce and distribute film projects, books, and more.
Mackie and Dornan Swing Sci-Fi
Deadline reports that Anthony Mackie and Jamie Dornan have signed on for Synchronic, a project from The Endless directors, Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson. The two play New Orleans paramedics, whose “lives are ripped apart after encountering a series of horrific deaths that are linked to a designer drug with bizarre, otherworldly effects.” Spooky! The directors issued a glowing joint statement:
“Being huge fans of the nuanced, brilliant work of Anthony and Jamie, this is a filmmaker’s wildest dream come true. They each possess an extraordinary depth of personal experiences, humor, and pathos that brings a massive wellspring of humanity to the battle-scarred partnership being portrayed. We’ve found the perfect collaborators to tell a bold, frightening, heartstring-tugging story.”
Zombieland 2 to Begin Filming 2019
While talking with Fandango, director Ruben Fleischer revealed that Zombieland 2 begins filming next year in Georgia.
“We’re already actually starting Zombieland. I’ve been scouting and storyboarding and getting it going, and to get to work with that cast again is just an absolute dream come true. It’s been really exciting starting to think about that movie, and to get to work with Emma, Jesse, Woody and Abigail once again is truly a dream come true. Yeah, we’re just at the very early stages, but we have an amazing script, and we’re going to start shooting in Georgia in January.”
Eddie Murphy Gets Grumpy
Deadline has word that director Tim Story and Eddie Murphy have teamed up for a project “inspired by” (read: remake of) 1993’s Grumpy Old Men. The original, starring Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon, centered on two feuding neighbors competing for a woman’s affections. Though there’s no one confirmed for the opposite lead, Deadline has heard “Samuel L. Jackson’s name as an inspired idea. He and Story just wrapped Shaft.”

Emily Blunt picks up the umbrella for Mary Poppins Returns, featuring Lin-Manuel Miranda’s sketchy attempt at a cockney accent:
