Jack White Releases Two New Songs
Jack White is back with two new singles, a music video, and the official announcement for his upcoming solo album, Boarding House Reach. Earlier today, the edgy music video for “Connected by Love” was released along with the audio of his second single, “Respect Commander.” While both songs hint at a new, more experimental direction, White’s signature style remains in full force. “Connected By Love” features a thick and ominous synth that we rarely see from him. It’s a simple, yet emotionally gripping song; perhaps the result of his unique approach to writing this album.
In a 2017 interview with The New Yorker, White gave insight into his writing process. “I want to write like Michael Jackson would write—instead of writing parts on the instruments or humming melodies, you think of them,” he said. “Connected By Love” is the result of that process. Not his normal blues melody, but something darker and more psychedelic.
The second single, “Respect Commander,” feels more like a song that was manufactured in the studio. The track features very little vocals, and experiments more with the percussion and guitar. It sounds like a canvas full of random paint, scribbles and incoherent gibberish that somehow fits so well together.
The official release date for White’s album has yet to be announced, but expect it sometime this Spring. With headlining performances at The Governor’s Ball and Shaky Knees Festival this year, we should be privy to more of White’s material before the beginning of summer.
