Kanye West Takes Us to ‘Church’ with Sunday Service
For certain religious folks — depending on their faith — a typical Sunday may include rolling out of bed before 10am. Why? Well, to quickly get dressed for church. Once the church doors open and you’ve wiped enough sleep from your eyes, you’re welcomed by a choir singing praises to your creator. It is this exact practice that Kanye West is revolutionizing. Every Sunday, over 50 celebrities, musicians and Kardashians gather at his home with his wife in Calabasas.
The event is not open to the public and is considered to be a”fun, family event for everyone to get together.” The atmosphere is a whole vibe full of positivity sparked by music and prayer.
“It’s a very inspirational service where people come together to share music and prayer. There’s a great energy and vibe being out in nature. It’s unlike anything else and friends and family have reacted very positively. It’s something Kanye created and looks forward to every week.” — E! News
“They host about 50 people and its very enlightening and spiritual. They always have some sort of gospel music aspect and everything is live and really fun. Kanye thinks its beneficial and truly believes in putting out worship messages through music.” — E! News
The not-so-typical gathering began January 2019, garnering attention throughout social media with celebrity attendees— including Tyler, The Creator, Diplo, and Katy Perry. Earlier in the month, DMX, who was released from jail in January, opened up “Sunday Service” with a prayer. He touched upon receiving blessings, fighting against negativity, and doors opening that were once closed. His prayer earned him cheers from the crowd who encouraged him to keep preaching.
Moments like DMX leading prayer make this weekly event even more epic, however, the music alone makes the experience. Could Sunday Service be a preview to Kanye’s much-anticipated Yandhi album? According to Refinery 29, his new song titled “We Have Everything We Need” is expected to appear on the record. The song has been featured in more than one Sunday Service clip, appearing in early January when David Bullock shared a Tweet of the Yeezus choir performing the song.
West was recently spotted in a Miami recording studio, alongside Lil Wayne, Migos, Timbaland, 2 Chainz, Tee Grizzley, and others. Presumably, they were brought together to work on Kanye’s unreleased ninth album, Yandhi, which will hopefully see a release sometime in 2019.
Been a while since I’ve gone to Sunday Service but this one was a different type of energy. @TWFTonyWilliams on the vocals 🎤 pic.twitter.com/i2PN6ICK9U
