Swedish artist JÁNA
New single, Outsider
JÁNA was born in Uppsala, Sweden, about an hour from Stockholm where she now resides. In the summer of 2020 JÁNA released an anticipated debut EP named Flowerworks, following two previous singles called Wild Roses and Lotus. Both songs quickly got praised by publications such as The FADER, COLORS, Lyrical Lemonade, and The Line Of Best Fit, as well as Swedish media.
JÁNA started out in her parents’ garage in Uppsala, in a home-made studio. She shared her parent’s attention with a younger brother Gustav, and older sister Josefin.
JÁNA’s real name is Johanna Andrén and she’s recently explained that her process of creating, and initially connecting with a sound involves collages of lyrics, images and sound-sketches, until she feels that the right emotion and narrative emerges. The result is something very far from what you would expect from a young Swedish girl.
For an emerging artist, her music already has a distinct ‘JÁNA feel’ -a dreamy mix of jazzy pop, lounge and R&B. The songs all feature her soulful vocals. She recently said in an interview, that for a long time she was fairly protective of herself, and a bit hesitant to open up. But her single Wild Roses helped her do just that, and has changed her creative process.
The new single Outsider, released just days ago, is Co-produced with Little Dragon drummer Erik Bodin, and continues her journey as an artist with a distinctive dreamy sound, mixed with cool R&B impressions. It is a breakup-song where she questions herself, her ex, and their relationship -much like one does when a partnership comes to an end.
Don’t be surprised if you hear her chill sound in a restaurant close to you soon. JANA’s got a new track scheduled to be released in April and we hear it has all the makings of a Tinseltown-soundtrack.
