On Wax: Danny Brown, Travis Scott, Gucci Mane + More
ON WAX IS A WEEKLY TAKE UPDATING YOU ON THE POCKET OF CULTURE KNOWN AS HIP-HOP. WE BRING YOU EVERYTHING FROM BREAKING NEWS TO ALBUM DROPS, JAIL TIME AND WHO’S BEEFING WITH WHO.
Danny Brown Dropped Fifth Album
Modern underground legend, Danny Brown, has released his newest album, uknowhatimsayin¿ It comes after one of his most critically acclaimed projects, and Danny manages to deliver. This new album is executively produced by Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest, which gave the album a great blend of both artists’ style of hip-hop (Danny’s strange taste for experimentation is here, as is the jazzy boom bap flavors we know and love from Q-Tip.) Other production comes from JPEGMAFIA, Flying Lotus, and Thundercat. For fans of rap, uknowhatimsayin¿ should not be missed, as Danny dropped an AOTY contender.
Travis Scott’s Return
After a Netflix documentary and public breakup, Travis Scott released his first new song since ASTROWORLD. The new track, “HIGHEST IN THE ROOM,” continues the typical hypnotic auto-tuned aesthetic of Travis’ work. It also features a beautiful instrumental outro from Mike Dean, as well as production from OZ. While there’s still probably plenty of time before we get a whole new Travis Scott project, it’s nice to have a single from him. Whether he’ll change it up or continue his aesthetic is to be determined.
Gucci Mane’s Big Week
ATL superstar, Gucci Mane, continues to make a splash in the music world, as well as the fashion world. After Gucci announced his 15th studio album, Woptober II, he also announced his collab with a high fashion brand. A long time coming, the rapper is taking part in a campaign with Gucci and the collection will be released next year. Alongside the album announcement comes a new single, “Big Booty,” featuring Megan Thee Stallion. The album will come out on October 17th of this year.
DaBaby Video + Interview
Fresh off of dropping his sophomore album, Kirk, DaBaby dropped a music video for “VIBEZ.” The video continues to showcase the playful nature of this North Carolina rapper. In addition to this, DaBaby stopped by The Breakfast Club, bringing Stunna 4 Vegas along with him. There he talks about the trial of losing his father, being on tour, and working with Lizzo and Megan Thee Stallion.
Doja Cat Goes Early 2000s
As we await Doja Cat’s next album, the artist dropped her single, “Bottom Bitch.” The song appropriately samples Blink-182’s “What’s My Age Again?,” as Doja goes full sk8er gurl in the music video. Feeling almost like a relic of MySpace, the video features plenty of skating and pop punk girl power. The song will be featured on her sophomore album, Hot Pink, due in November.
Slowly making his return, Shabazz PGB comes forward with “Box,” proving that he shouldn’t be counted out of the race for the hottest DMV artist. While not the most impressive thing he has released, it certainly serves its purpose when feeding hungry fans.
LilCj Kasino seems to be nonstop with track after track. This time coming in with “Big Bank Take Lil Bank,” which raises the question if he’s next to bubble from Texas. With artists such as Splurge, Go Yayo, Peso Peso, and Muddy Water Wayne, the talent pool appears to be growing every week.
Until next time, it’s On Wax.
