On Wax: Future, J. Cole, Gucci Gang + More
ON WAX IS A WEEKLY TAKE UPDATING YOU ON THE POCKET OF CULTURE KNOWN AS HIP-HOP. WE BRING YOU EVERYTHING FROM BREAKING NEWS TO ALBUM DROPS, JAIL TIME AND WHO’S BEEFING WITH WHO.
Future Drops Single Ahead of Album Release
Trap behemoth, Future, is starting off 2019 with a splash. The artist dropped a new single titled “Crushed Up,” alongside visuals. The song is produced by Wheezy and is in the vein of the current hip-hop landscape. Future also revealed that his next album will come out January 18th with the title being TBA. This is the first official Future album since 2017, with the week apart releases of FUTURE & HNDRXX. However, Future has dropped a plethora of other projects since, such as BEASTMODE 2 and more recently his joint project with Juice WRLD. Let’s hope Future drops a solid project.
J. Cole Reveals Dreamville Posse Album
On Sunday, J.Cole released teasers that point to Dreamville’s upcoming release of Revenge of the Dreamers III compilation project. This is the first Dreamville compilation since 2015, with the release of Revenge of the Dreamers II. The new project stars J.I.D, Earthgang, Bas, Cozz, and Ari Lennox—one can imagine that this might be the year for Dreamville.

At Coachella this Year… Gucci Gang?
The Coachella lineup was released, and people scratched their heads in intrigue at who was listed on the lineup. While many gravitated toward their favorite artists, one name stuck out for us, Gucci Gang. Well it’s not a mystery anymore, the name belongs to the collab of Gucci Maine, Lil Pump, and Smokepurpp. Similar to Glacier Boys (that Gucci has with Migos and Lil Yachty), however, expect more to be headed our way—especially hitting the Coachella stage.
Noname Drops New Song
While Noname fans are used to waiting awhile for new music, she opened 2019 with a single. “Song 31” is the first new song since her album, Room 25, which dropped in September. The song sounds like a Noname song with live instrumentals and angelic choir vocals, and frequent collaborator Phoelix kills this track. If you love Noname, you should be bumping this, and if you’re not familiar with these artists, this is a good jumping off point.
D’Angelo Releases Song from Red Dead Redemption 2
New D’Angelo music is rare. It took 14 years to release his third album titled Black Messiah, and he hasn’t released music since. However, who would’ve guessed his next song would come from a video game? D’Angelo has officially released the track titled “Unshaken,” which is a gorgeous haunting track from the multitalented artist. The song is from the game Red Dead Redemption 2 that is no stranger to amazing soundtracks. Whether this means we have more D’Angelo releasing soon is uncertain, but anything new from the neo soul icon is welcomed.
Spotlight: SpaceL33
We are kicking the year off with a new up-and-coming rapper, SpaceL33. The new artist would recruit Houston rapper, Trae Perry, for the track titled “Zoom!.” The sound is modest, however, it never loses its right to brag. Although it is currently unknown what the rest of the year might bring these two, let’s see who is next to raise the bar…
Until next time, it’s On Wax.
