On Wax: GoldLink, Dreamville, Drake + More
ON WAX IS A WEEKLY TAKE UPDATING YOU ON THE POCKET OF CULTURE KNOWN AS HIP-HOP. WE BRING YOU EVERYTHING FROM BREAKING NEWS TO ALBUM DROPS, JAIL TIME AND WHO’S BEEFING WITH WHO.
GoldLink Released Diaspora
Two years after At What Cost, D.C.’s GoldLink has dropped a new album. Diaspora is the alternative hip-hop’s newest brainchild. Both wavy and danceable, the cohesive project is sounding like summer in the best way. With features from heavyweights, like Tyler, The Creator and Khalid— alongside fan favorites, like Pusha T and WizKid— there’s no reason not to bump this. Tracks, like “Maniac” and “Coke White/Moscow,” are perfect for trap fans, while other songs, like “Zulu Screams” and “More,” are uptempo jams. GoldLink’s diversity as an artist is definitely a highlight and it deserves to not be overlooked.
GoldLink is the artist who has always been good; very few times has he not been able to deliver. Releasing his second album, Disporia, GoldLink attempts to hijack summer after the “Father of Asad” flop. If he does take it, there aren’t as many as this deserving.
ROTD 3 is Coming
The Dreamville clan famously had their Return Of The Dreamers III sessions at the beginning of the year. Since then, fans have been eagerly waiting music from those sessions to be released….until now. Finally, we received two tracks packaged as 1-888-88-DREAM. The first track, “Down Bad,” is a banger featuring Dreamville spitters, J.I.D., Bas, J. Cole and EARTHGANG, alongside ATL rapper, Young Nudy. The beat is chopped together DJ style accompanied with some nice trap drums to round it out, and the Dreamville posse tear that beat apart. The other track, “Got Me,” is a slower jam featuring Ari Lennox and Omen, alongside Chicago’s Dreezy and LA’s own Ty Dolla $ign. The track samples Faith Evan’s “Come Over” with all of the artists doing their thing. With the artists teasing a release soon, hopefully these songs are good enough to keep us holding on.
After celebrating a Toronto Raptors victory, Drake released The Best In The World Pack. The first solo music from Drake since Scorpion sees the hip-hop heavyweight rapping once again. “Omertà” is Drizzy spitting one long verse about how great his life is. The crown jewel of the two, however, is “Money In The Grave” with Rick Ross. The bouncy track sounds like it was made for Tyga, and both artists ride it beautifully. It’s still to be determined if Drake is returning to a more rap centric style of hip-hop. Time will tell.
Free Nationals Dropped a Posthumous Mac Miller Verse
Anderson .Paak’s amazing band, Free Nationals, dropped a track. The soulful tune titled “Time” features gorgeous vocals from Kali Uchis and a tear-jerking Mac Miller verse. While Spotify released Spotify sessions with Mac, this is the first official new music we’ve seen from the late rapper. With so much unreleased music from Mac, it’s possible we’ll see more as producer 88-Keys revealed he’s releasing an official version of a leaked track, which will also feature Sia. RIP Mac Miller.
Gucci x Meek
Gucci Mane has dropped a new track with Meek Mill. The Zaytoven produced “Backwards” is a solid banger that sounds like a Gucci classic. The chemistry between the two artists is solid enough to make an exciting track, and it’s expected to be featured on Gucci’s next project, Delusions of Grandeur. The project will also feature “Love Thru The Computer” featuring Justin Bieber, as well as a yet to be released Kenny Beats’ produced track.
Joji is Back with All of the Feels
88rising star, Joji, has returned with a new sensual banger. “Sanctuary” is a futuristic R&B track featuring some of Joji’s best vocal work. The song is nice and chill with an explosive chorus that is beautiful to the ears. This is the first new track from the artist since last year’s Ballads 1. Hopefully, Joji phones in on the aesthetics of this new single and drops a stellar project soon.
Bandana is Coming
The next project from Madlib and Freddie Gibbs is just around the corner. Bandana is the sequel to the duo’s previous project, Piñata, and is set to drop June 29th, but not before some singles. The newest track is “Giannis” featuring Anderson .Paak. Freddie murders the track over one of the best Madlib beats we’ve heard in a while. Anderson comes through with his thing as well, giving a great rap/sung performance. Get hyped for Bandana.
DaBaby Dropped More Visuals
If there’s an artist whose channeled Ludacris use of comedy in videos, that crown would comfortably be worn by no one except for DaBaby. DaBaby released “Carpet Burn,” which is another firm track from the artist and a hilarious music video from start to finish.
Skippa Da Flippa Dropped QC Insight
One artist that really hasn’t had a chance to be heard out is Skippa Da Flippa. Dab God himself, who was once a member of QC, but left before the Quality Control project was underway. In this interview below, we get a little more insight into why the Atlanta native took a different route.
NLE Choppa is Still Rising
What more could be said about NLE Choppa other than his potential. Kicking the week off with a music video for “Free Youngboy,” then to end the week with TaySav with a track called “Problems.” With a tape on the way, we can only expect a solid project from the youth.
Until next time, it’s On Wax,
