On Wax: Q Da Fool & Kenny Beats, Gunna, #FREE21, “Girls, Girls, Girls” + More
ON WAX IS A WEEKLY TAKE UPDATING YOU ON THE POCKET OF CULTURE KNOWN AS HIP-HOP. WE BRING YOU EVERYTHING FROM BREAKING NEWS TO ALBUM DROPS, JAIL TIME AND WHO’S BEEFING WITH WHO.
Q Da Fool Teams Up with Kenny Beats
After dropping a project with Zaytoven last year, Roc Nation’s Q Da Fool is back with another producer project. Bad Influence is a hard-hitting EP that was produced by Kenny Beats. Kenny has been hotter than ever after working with artists like Vince Staples, Rico Nasty and Key!. The duo cook up a solid 14 minutes of street anthems. Q is interesting enough to stand out amongst other trap artists, and his articulation is on point—alongside fun yet threatening bars of the street life. The duo make a great team that will hopefully return.
21 Savage Taken into Custody
In a weird series of events, 21 Savage was handed over to ICE over an expired Visa dating back to 2005. According to ICE, 21 was here illegally and is originally a citizen of the UK, which is vague given that the UK consists of several countries. 21 Savage has ties to Dominica, a Caribbean country that is formally a British colony. Anyone born in Dominica can receive a British citizenship under certain circumstances. Nonetheless, lots of confusion about the incident arose. It was not known that 21 wasn’t born in the states, as most assumed he was born and raised in Atlanta. Hopefully, 21 will be okay to return to the United States soon.
ICE spokesman Bryan Cox: “U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested unlawfully present United Kingdom national Sha Yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph AKA ‘21 Savage’ during a targeted operation with federal and local law enforcement partners early Sunday in metro Atlanta.” https://t.co/G0WlPymYIr

Gunna Drops a Solo Track
While Gunna has gotten much hype between features and last year’s collab project with Lil Baby, the College Park artist is gearing up for a solo project. “One Call” is Gunna riding the current hip-hop landscape to the fullest. We still have to wait and to see if he’ll stand out amongst the crowd, however, his ties to YSL will keep him going.
2 Chainz Hops on Ariana Grande’s Latest Single
In features that I did not anticipate, 2 Chainz is on the official remix to Ariana Grande’s “7 Rings.” The song is a poppy trap tune with Ariana’s gorgeous vocals, redoing the melody to “My Favorite Things.” 2 Chainz comes through to do the same, as well as adding his flair on the track. Both artists actually compliment each other very well, giving the song a nice blend of pop and trap.
YBN Cordae Tributes Jay-Z
The young lyrical YBN member, YBN Cordae, dropped a new track called “Locationships.” The song is a great showcase of Cordae’s skills, as a great rapper and singer. The song may sound familiar as it mirrors Jay-Z song titled “Girls, Girls, Girls” from The Blueprint. A modern version of a Jay-Z classic is smart, and Cordae is definitely the artist to pull it off.
Wiz & Curren$y’s Classic Mixtape is Finally Streamable
After almost 10 years, Wiz Khalifa and Curren$y’s How Fly mixtape is now on streaming services. The duo made a great stoner project, and the tape still holds up today. A lot of stellar soulful beats with a little Southern flair creates a great project. Not to mention, Wiz and Spitta were hungry as hell, killing all these beats. Take a trip down memory lane and bump the project once again.
TDE’s Newest Singee: Zacari
If you’ve been paying attention, you probably have noticed an artist named Zacari showing up on TDE projects—most notably the Black Panther (soundtrack) and Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. The label has officially announced his signing, alongside the single titled “Don’t Trip.” The track is smooth and bouncy, which is perfect for driving. Zacari has a mainstream R&B edge that could go far if he plays his cards right. Signing with TDE is definitely the right hand to be dealt to him.
Until next time, it’s On Wax.
