On Wax: The Week of Drops with Chance The Rapper, Tyler The Creator, and Tekashi 6ix9ine
ON WAX IS A WEEKLY TAKE UPDATING YOU ON THE POCKET OF CULTURE KNOWN AS HIP-HOP. WE BRING YOU EVERYTHING FROM BREAKING NEWS TO ALBUM DROPS, JAIL TIME AND WHO’S BEEFING WITH WHO.
TYLER DROPS BRONCO
Tyler, The Creator blessed us with something that has never been done before. The flower boy revealed a private Instagram that has content from two years ago. The IG account documents the creation of his 2016 masterpiece, Flower Boy, with behind-the-scenes studio footage of moments from the start till the day the account went public. It’s rare to see an artist do what they do best, and of course, a great mind like Tyler found a creative way to do it. He also dropped a remix to Lil Baby and Drake’s hit, “Yes Indeed.” The freestyle titled “Bronco” is more bars from the underlooked lyrical side of Tyler.
HEAD IN THE CLOUDS OFFICIALLY DROPPED
88rising, the label who is bringing light to Asian hip-hop, dropped their stellar summertime posse album, Head in the Clouds. The project features popular 88rising acts like Rich Brian, Joji, Keith Ape, and Higher Brothers, alongside new names like August 08 and NIKI. The project also has guest features from Playboi Carti, BlocBoy JB, 03 Greedo, among others. Head in the Clouds serves as a summertime feel-good project, which each artist brings their own uniqueness to the table. Overall, it’s a great beach or poolside album to have a great time to.
BROCKHAMPTON ON THE WAY
As we wait for their fourth album, Puppy, the world’s greatest boy band BROCKHAMPTON dropped another single titled “1998 Truman.” Opening with a Jim Jones’ sample, you can expect craziness, and Brockhampton delivers. Every single member on the track delivers for an absolute banger that is certain to be deadly at their show.
TEKASHI AND NICKI DROP “FEFE”
What can I say about Tekashi’s “FEFE” track with Nicki Minaj…? There is a part of me that wants to admit it and say it’s a hit, but then it feels like it’s missing something. For Tekashi, it’s a level up because it does allow for him to appear versatile in contrast to other tracks he’s released in the past. Is Tekashi genuinely talked about as a rapper? Depends on the scale we’re grading him on. Although, there are plenty of unfair comparisons to put him up against, but for blooming in his generation of rappers and keeping a light on himself the way he has, currently he’s different. Before the controversy ruled Tekashi’s fame, on this wild path of twists and turns (ups and downs), Tekashi appears to be putting his best foot forward musically. The real question is where it ends up.
As for “FEFE,” I love the music video, however, the track still has me more on the fence than anything. It’s not great, but it’s definitely not bad.
TEKASHI HOSPITALIZED
While continuing to speak on twisting one’s fate, Tekashi is getting a back-to-back. Not for music, but the controversy that would appear to have caught up with him. For those unfamiliar, Tekashi was briefly kidnapped and robbed from the times of 4am to 6am. While it is unclear about what exactly happened (because two different stories were released), Tekashi did end up in the hospital regardless, but is now okay.
BOBBY SHMURDA 2020
After an interview got out with Bobby denying beef with Tekashi, an even brighter set of news got out regarding Bobby Shmurda’s current jail sentence. Bobby stated, “When I get out, we’re going to fuck everything up. I got two years, 2020.” Possibly being paroled in December of that year, Bobby has expressed his interest in artists like Lil Baby, Gunna, and NBA Youngboy. With his release date coming near, you can’t help but get excited to see what Bobby does, and more importantly, what route he takes his career from there.
HIVE MIND IS HERE
The Odd Future bread soul band, The Internet, released their fourth album titled Hive Mind. The band, who is lead by Syd and Steve Lacy, manages to blend genres so smoothly, making breathtaking, angelic moments to groovy ones that just makes the listener want to dance. The band is growing off their Grammy nominated previous effort, Ego Death. The Internet has only one way to go from here, which is up.
CHANCE DROPS NEW MUSIC
Hip-hop’s saint has returned with new music. Chance drops several tracks, and the sound has a different vibe, while still very much holding on to that Chance The Rapper sound we love. From the second you hear “I Might Need Security,” you get sucked into a track you know is different than others. It instantly makes you miss the power of Chance’s music.
The new music from Chance was definitely needed, and for now it feels like enough, while Chance finishes cooking on whatever project he may or may not have in the works.
Until next time, its On Wax.
