On Wax: YNW Melly, Cardi B, Drake’s ‘So Far Gone’ Revisited + More
ON WAX IS A WEEKLY TAKE UPDATING YOU ON THE POCKET OF CULTURE KNOWN AS HIP-HOP. WE BRING YOU EVERYTHING FROM BREAKING NEWS TO ALBUM DROPS, JAIL TIME AND WHO’S BEEFING WITH WHO.
YNW Melly in Prison
On Wednesday, rapper YNW Melly was arrested and charged with two counts of murder of his two friends, Anthony Williams and Christopher Thomas Jr, and he is being denied bail. The reason being: the recent arrest would be due to Miramar Police on October 26 at 4:35am, and Cortlen Henry, the other suspect being investigated, pulled up to the hospital with both men dead in the backseat. After giving their statements, it was found that the stories did not match up. Suspicions grew after evidence returned, linking YNW Melly to the crime and believing that he and Henry staged the drive by shooting leading to his arrest. When responding to the situation, YNW Melly would post, “couple months ago I lost my two brothers by violence and now the system wants to find justice…unfortunately a lot of rumors and lies are being said, but no worries god is with me and my brother,” to his Instagram. Currently, YNW Melly’s track, “Murder On My Mind,” reached number one on Apple Music.
Cardi B Drops New Record with Bruno Mars + Blueface Remix
A person who might be at the top of his game enjoying the fruits and labors of his smash hit titled “Thotiana,” Blueface would recruit Cardi B for the newest remix. The remix allows Cardi to dominate, but not in the highest way she usually can lyrically. The song in some ways doesn’t change no matter who is on it, however, this does not keep it from being a fun track. So, if you haven’t checked it out yet:
Cardi B also managed to drop her own track with her homie Bruno Mars. “Please Me” comes right off the success of the duos last single titled “Finesse Remix,” however, this time Cardi’s in charge. She comes through with fun, sexual bars—even going as far as saying her pussy is like Horchata. Amazing.
Drake Re-releases So Far Gone
It’s been 10 years since “Best I Ever Had” dominated airwaves, and the world was just getting to learn what was to be the biggest artist of our time. Drake has cleverly re-released his breakthrough mixtape, So Far Gone, featuring the sensitive post-808s & Heartbreak styles, alongside some Houston influence. Take a trip back to 2009, or listen to this early incarnation of Drake for the first time—as the project is finally on streaming services.
Offset is Gearing Up for His Solo Album
Migos’ Offset released a music video for his track, “Red Room,” that is produced by Metro Boomin. With this video, the artist gives listeners a deeper look into his life. Also, the video works perfectly for what Offset was going for. The camera moves smoothly and stays at a safe distance, so that we may move with the narration without being distracted. With 2/3 of the Migos group releasing their own solo projects, this may be a peek at what we should expect from Offset in the future.
Denzel Curry Covers a Rage Against The Machine Classic
Ever wonder what Rage Against The Machine would sound like if Denzel Curry did vocals? Well, look no further…Denzel did a cover of “Bulls On Parade” that was released on Valentine’s Day. The style blends perfectly as Curry’s energy doesn’t need to do much to keep pace. While Zach’s voice is still king when it comes to these tracks, (if you’re a fan of both) you should still be able to find much joy in this one.
Catch Up with Casanova
If you haven’t heard of Casanova, you might have to think about where you’ve been lately. Whether it’s the brief beef with 6ix9ine, looking out for a young A$AP Rocky in jail, or the recent “Get the Strap” collab with 50 Cent and Uncle Murda, he should’ve at least indirectly caught your eye. Either way, Casanova joined The Breakfast Club where he would speak about his new EP, amongst other topics like Gucci, 6ix9ine being locked up, and how he doesn’t want problems with other rappers.
Lil Ak x Tekashi
DJ Akademiks, a.k.a Lil Ak, dropped his recent collab with Tekashi 6ix9ine called “Lanes.” This track is filled with ice island vibes, and both artists ride the beat nicely. Given the circumstance of Tekashi 6ix9ine being locked up, you have to wonder if a music video for this one could be in the works (in the event he is supposed to be released in the next year or so).
On Wax Spotlight: Zsela
If ever there was a voice that could silence a room and snatch the attention of every fiber in a person’s body, it would definitely be musical artist Zsela’s voice. Recently performing at Neuehouse in Hollywood, the audience was so mesmerized as they were left unable to take their eyes off of the stage as she sung at an angelic volume. What might’ve been most impressive was not the heights her voice reached, but the ability of the passion that was able to keep up. If there is an artist to keep an eye out for, this would be the one.
Until next time, it’s On Wax.
