On Wax: Young M.A, DaBaby, Tee Grizzley + More
ON WAX IS A WEEKLY TAKE UPDATING YOU ON THE POCKET OF CULTURE KNOWN AS HIP-HOP. WE BRING YOU EVERYTHING FROM BREAKING NEWS TO ALBUM DROPS, JAIL TIME AND WHO’S BEEFING WITH WHO.
Young M.A Drops Debut
Long overdue, Young M.A graces fans with her debut album, Herstory in the Making. Having a small glimpse of the project from her singles, like “PettyWap” and “Stubborn Ass,” the album is stacked with 20 tracks plus a “PettyWap 2” bonus. Young M.A wanted to make this album personal, so it doesn’t come as a surprise that there are only two features from Relle Bey and Max YB. This one is for the fans who waited long enough for Young M.A to launch her first full-length project.
DaBaby Opens Up
With the exception of Megan Thee Stallion, there hasn’t really been an artist who has had more eyes on them than DaBaby. Bouncing all around like a ping-pong ball, it is good to see DaBaby finally switch it up a bit and get personal again. “Intro” is softer, but punches harder than a lot of his other tracks.
Tee Grizzley’s First Track Since Tragedy
One of the more tragic events in hip-hop this year was the murder of Tee Grizzley’s aunt and manager. The Detroit rapper has released “Satish,” which is a mixed emotional track of the young artist coping with the tragedy. He doesn’t let any emotions stay hidden, as he reminisces about his aunt and shows love to her—but also speaks about anger and a thirst for revenge. While these feelings can be understood, let’s hope that there isn’t anymore bloodshed in these streets. We wish the best for Tee Grizzley and his family.
Migos Album is OTW
In an epic delight, Offset from Migos dropped by WWE to announce Charlotte Flair before her entrance to the ring. Going back to when Offset released “Ric Flair Drip,” it comes as no surprise that Offset would pull through. What is a surprise is what came out during an interview backstage where he mentioned a new Migos album is on its way. Having not been at the forefront this year, Migos still holds a heavyweight position in hip-hop. It’s going to be exciting to see what this next one looks like for the group.
Vibe with Mick Jenkins
Mick Jenkins surfaces with Qari, bringing us a music video for “Percy.” What can be much appreciated is the vibe of the entire presentation. Mick Jenkins brings forward a track that capitalizes on heartfelt emotion, and speaks directly to the heart.
Free Nationals Get Funkadelic
As we eagerly await their debut, Free Nationals have dropped another track, “On Sight.” Featuring J.I.D, MIKNNA and Kadhja Bonet, it is a funky psychedelic dream like no other. The mysterious low-key vocals compliment the instrumentals, alongside a stellar J.I.D verse. Hopefully, Free Nationals won’t make us wait too much longer for their debut album.
Slim Thug x Lil Flip
Legends Slim Thug and Lil Flip step forward, reminding you why you fell in love with that Southern style in the first place. The track, “Floating,” reels you in and keeps you the entire ride from start to finish.
Splurge Goes “RoboCop”
Working harder than ever, Splurge comes through with another video, but this time for his track, “RoboCop.” It strays from the grittier style of the last three videos he dropped last week, infusing RoboCop clips with Splurge around Johnny Dang. It’s entertaining, however, you definitely are left wondering what’s next for the young emcee.
Peso Peso x G$ Lil Ronnie
This week, the Hardest Esa Ever and G$ Lil Ronnie unite for “If Its Up.” With both men on a roll as of lately, it wasn’t hard to see this one coming. Making more noise than ever down South in Texas, they are showing signs of unison.
Until next time, it’s On Wax.
