The Drop – Anderson .Paak, James Bay, & Disclosure
The Drop is us cutting through the massive jungle of new music that’s been released over the last seven days. We sharpen our proverbial machetes and cut through the shit to get you to the content that you need to be listening to.
This is The Drop.
Anderson .Paak – “Bubblin”
.Paak’s second release in 2018 is full of bars with a mix of strings and drum beats. The whole song is lively, energetic, and full of flows; .Paak does not disappoint. In his interview with Zane Lowe, .Paak gushed: “I have 65,000 songs in the vault,” he said. “No features, fam.” So, on the premise of new music, we can expect a large sum from Anderson .Paak this year.
James Bay – “Wasted On Each Other”
James Bay’s sophomore album, Electric Light, has finally been released, and it is everything I could’ve wanted and more. Straying away from the majority singer-songwriter sounds that were found on his first album, Electric Light showcases the rock side of Bay. Each track tells a different story and has a sound that Bay says is inspired by Frank Ocean. The album is becoming one of my favorite releases, and is the ideal sophomore album for one of my favorite artists in the industry. Listeners note: If you are already a James Bay fan— buy this album on Vinyl, which makes it exceedingly perfect.
Disclosure & Fatoumata Diawara – “Ultimatum”
Disclosure has made their way back into the dance music community with their signature house sounds and wavy beats. This is their first single since 2016, and it’s the first glimmer of music from their upcoming third album that is currently in the works.
Oli Fox – “Cruel”
Oli Fox is a new found artist for me that has just released his debut track titled “Cruel.” His wide range of octaves make his sound glossy and pure. The song is easy listening with a clean beat, however, the song is undeniably captivating. Oli Fox is a definite new artist on my radar.
Ray LaMontagne – “To The Sea”
Ray LaMontagne is one of the first singer-songwriter artists that made me fall in love with the genre. His crisp vocals and lighthearted stories have always drawn me in. “To The Sea” is just that off of his new album, Part Of the Light. The song brings happiness from the very start and continues to shine until the very last note.
Violet Days – “Just A Little”
Violet Days latest track, “Just a Little,” comes from their upcoming EP, Made In My Head, that is to be released this summer. The track talks about being in a relationship that feels too good to be true. It is the type of indie pop that I love; an effortless beat makes the vocals soar on this sweet and heartfelt track.
