The Drop – Anderson .Paak + Kendrick Lamar, The Lumineers, & More
The Drop is us cutting through the massive jungle of new music that’s been released over the last seven days. We sharpen our proverbial machetes and cut through the shit to get you to the content that you need to be listening to.
This is The Drop.
Anderson .Paak & Kendrick Lamar – “Tints” (Pick of the Week)
I have been playing this song nonstop since its release last week. It is full of .Paak flavor that I always look forward to from him, and with the addition of Kendrick Lamar, the song is absolutely my favorite of the week. “Tints” has a funky vibe and makes me want more collabs from this duo.
LANY – “Taking Me Back”
LANY has released their newest album, Malibu Nights, and it is nine tracks that are full of emotion and heartbreak. The indie group showcases their ballad and acoustic side on the latter half of the album, but “Taking Me Back” is becoming my favorite from this project. It is similar to their previous releases, like “If You See Her” and “I Don’t Wanna Love You Anymore.” “Taking Me Back” is a pop fusion synth with emotionally charged lyrics. LANY will be setting out on their new tour later this month.
BAYNK & Sinead Harnett – “Settle”
The latest track from BAYNK features vocals from one of my favorite on the rise R&B artists, Sinead Harnett. It is a wavy ballad from Sinead that is one of my top picks from her this year.
Ookay – “Bad Habits”
Ookay always delivers new music with colorful drops and lively synths. “Bad Habits” features vocals from Ookay himself, and is giving me all of the Chromeo vibes that I am here for. “Bad Habits” feels like a song that is bringing me back to summertime once again.
Halsey – “Without Me”
Halsey is letting all the feelings out about her summer breakup with G-Eazy go, and it is coming in the form of her newest single, “Without Me.” It is her most personal song yet, even being released under her birth name, Ashley Frangipane. In her interview with Zane Lowe she says, “It’s like this is really me talking about my life. It kind of gave me like an existential crisis as an artist a little bit, because I’ve prided myself on being an artist who’s authentic and writes about her life and all that stuff. And then when I made this and I felt just how bad it hurt.” It brings me back to early Halsey, and I love it.
The Lumineers – “Walls”
The Lumineers x Tom Petty…I don’t think I could ask for anything better. I have been missing the folk sounds of The Lumineers, and this release from them is exactly what I wanted for the start of the fall season. The stripped down version, honoring the one year anniversary since Tom Petty’s passing, is the perfect celebration to such an amazing artist.
K?D & Mickey Kojak – “Electronic Memories”
Since kicking off his own headlining tour, K?d has also released his new era of music with his EP, Find Paradise. His most progressive sound yet is on the track “Electronic Memories,” featuring Mickey Kojak. The song explores the rhythms and waves from Toyko, while keeping the synths that K?d has become so well-known for.
