The Drop – Beyoncé, Cage The Elephant, & The Weeknd
The Drop is us cutting through the massive jungle of new music that’s been released over the last seven days. We sharpen our proverbial machetes and cut through the shit to get you to the content that you need to be listening to.
This is The Drop.

Beyoncé – HOMECOMING: THE LIVE ALBUM
Beyoncé surprised fans with not only a complete inside look and recap of her iconic Coachella 2018 performance, but also with a full live album. The Netflix film dives into the preparation she went through and the entire thought process behind the performance— and basically made me an even bigger Beyoncé fan than I already was. The album is an extension of the film, and if you are a Beyoncé fan, this live album is here to make you love her even more.
Cage The Elephant – Social Cues
A new phase for Cage The Elephant is underway with the release of their new album, Social Cues. The album was quite the process to make while lead singer, Matt Shultz, went through the ups and downs of separating from his wife. In the song titled “Goodbye,” he tells the entire story in the somber ballad that closes out the album, and it has definitely become one of my favorite tracks off of the album. Across their entire new project, they explore new ranges of sound all the while circling back to their rock roots, making each song sound so new and fresh. I am here for the 2019 Cage The Elephant.
SZA, The Weeknd, & Travis Scott – “Power is Power”
SZA, The Weeknd, and Travis Scott collaborated on the Game of Thrones inspired album, For The Throne. This is the third single from the album and there are still 11 more tracks to come. The song, of course, talks of fire and ice, as well as coming back to life (Jon Snow this one is for you). It basically hits all of the major plot points so far in the series, and it is leaving me even more excited for the next week’s episode.
Alice Gray – “Take Me to the Water”
Alice Gray’s new single has a mystical pop presence that I have fallen in love with. “Take Me to the Water” has a sweet elegance that’s completely captivating, and the more I listen to it, the more it becomes one of my favorite releases of the week. Simple and honest, Alice Gray is a definite artist to watch.
Kygo & Rita Ora – “Carry On”
Kygo and Rita Ora released their new track, “Carry On,” which comes from the Detective Pikachu soundtrack. Kygo shared on Twitter, “Growing up I was a huge fan of Pokémon, and it was a big part of my childhood — I’m very excited to announce the official Detective Pikachu Soundtrack ‘Carry On’ together with @ritaora! — out now!” The single is an upbeat dance track that is oozing with wavy synths and exotic drops. Pokémon: Detective Pikachu hits theaters this May.
Fitz and The Tantrums – “Don’t Ever Let Em”
I just love Fitz and The Tantrums, and I seriously could not be more excited to have a new album from them this year. Their latest single, “Don’t Ever Let Em,” is a feel-good reminder to keep your head up and to love your life. It is a lighthearted lyric with a lively beat that adds another dimension to Fitz’s upcoming album.
Slushii – “Dreaming of You”
Slushii is coming in hot with his big, bright and bouncy track titled “Dreaming Of You.” Robotic vocals morphed into an electrifying candy-coated drop, making this track main stage ready in true Slushii fashion.
