THE DROP – JAMES BAY, KEHLANI, & NGHTMRE
The Drop is us cutting through the massive jungle of new music that’s been released over the last seven days. We sharpen our proverbial machetes and cut through the shit to get you to the content that you need to be listening to.
This is The Drop.
James Bay & Julia Michaels – “Peer Pressure”
This collaboration is one I have been itching to hear from the start of 2019. The sweet serenades from Bay and Michaels are everything I wanted from two of my favorite storytellers in music. “Peer Pressure” is a lovely concept about new love and is captured effortlessly by these indie rock artists. Easily this is my favorite release of the week, and I wouldn’t mind an entire collaboration project from these two.
Kehlani – “Feels”
Kehlani is back with her new mixtape, While We Wait. Full of R&B gold, the nine-track project also features artists, like Dom Kennedy, Ty Dolla $ign, 6Lack, & Musiq Soulchild. “Feels” plays out as being one of my favorites from the project, with its classic R&B mantra where Kehlani’s vocals can really take over. Along with the mixtape, there are going to be exclusive pop-up shops in California, New York, Sydney, Tokyo, and London.
Max Styler & Elanese – “Animal”
If you love house music, then “Animal” is the release of the week for you. This dance heavy beat from Max Styler is an instant groove with its wavy tones and luscious synths. The energy oozing from this track is infectious from start to finish, and with vocals from singer/songwriter Elanese, it is taken to an even more radiant level.
Brasstracks – “Follows”
Brasstracks is creating a new age of hip-hop on their new EP, Before We Go. Utilizing live instruments and honing in on R&B energy, they continue to push boundaries of what they want their version of hip-hop to be. This is said to be the group’s final EP before dropping a debut album, so stay tuned for more from the edgy and eclectic Brasstracks.
NGHTMRE, Shaquille O’Neal, & Lil Jon – “BANG”
For those that didn’t know, yes, Shaquille O’Neal is in fact a DJ that now goes by DJ Diesel. He is known for his trap heavy sets that are meant to be headbanged to, and now we have a single that is just for that. NGHTMRE has been known for his grimy drops since coming onto the scene in 2014, and since then, has had a constant rise to the top of dance music. “BANG” is the perfect combination of the two DJs, and with iconic vocals from Lil Jon, this track is everything I never knew I needed.
DREAMERS – “Die Happy”
This latest release from Dreamers is a contagious track full of classic indie/alt-rock nuances. Funky guitar riffs and energetic vocals, making “Die Happy” another one of my top releases from this week, as I am in need of more rock releases in 2019. “Die Happy” comes off of Dreamers upcoming sophomore album that is set to be released sometime this year.
Party Favor & graves – “Reach For Me”
This new release from Party Favor and graves has my mind absolutely blown away. “Reach For Me” comes as the lead single from Party Favor’s upcoming album, Layers, which is set to be released this coming April. This collaboration taps on producer graves who is also a growing name in the dance music scene, so the combination of these two on the rise DJs makes this monster of a track even grander. Stay tuned for more from Party Favor because Layers is about to be an experience— unlike anything we have expected from this producer.
