The Drop – Kaytranada, Avicii, & Ellie Goulding
The Drop is us cutting through the massive jungle of new music that’s been released over the last seven days. We sharpen our proverbial machetes and cut through the shit to get you to the content that you need to be listening to.
This is The Drop.

Ellie Goulding – “Sixteen”
Elli Goulding is taking us back to her teenage years on her latest single, “Sixteen.” The track is vibrantly fresh and brings back all of the nostalgic feelings of what it feels to be young. Goulding has been releasing a lot more music in 2019, so I expect that we will be seeing a full resurgence of her this year.
Avicii & Aloe Blacc – “SOS”
“SOS” is the first release prior to the full release of the late Avicii’s album, Tim. The song has an understated rhythm to it, but lets Aloe Blacc’s vocals really tell the story. Aloe Blacc describes the song as “probably ahead of its time for when he wrote it…” The album, Tim, is set to be released this June.
Mark Ronson & Lykke Li – “Late Night Feelings”
Mark Ronson and Lykee Li collabed on their latest single, “Late Night Feelings.” On this groovy track, Lykke Li’s eclectic vocals make this an absolute vibe— and Mark Ronson brings all the disco flavors to create one of my favorite releases of the week.
Anderson .Paak & Brandy – “Jet Black”
The latest single from .Paak’s upcoming album, Ventura, enlists help from R&B artist, Brandy, who has also been working on new music in the studio. This song is summertime ready with wavy beats, and a cool and calm tone. The track has the perfect amount of bounce to matchup with .Paak’s smooth grooves, which is why this song keeps getting left on repeat.
Tame Impala – “Borderline”
Tame Impala is the artist that I am craving more and more new music from. Summertime is coming, and this is the music that I want to listen to during all of those sunshine months. “Borderline” was released just prior to his headlining performance this past weekend at Coachella, which after that performance, I am left wanting even more Tame Impala. The track’s luxurious, psychedelic sounds made it the picture perfect release to be dancing along to in the desert.
KAYTRANADA & VanJess – “DYSFUNCTIONAL”
Kaytranada has perfected the combination of R&B and dance music. “DYSFUNCTIONAL” is impossible to not find yourself moving along to the beat. This is the producer’s first release in some time, and is leaving me hopeful for more from him in the coming months. Kaytranada is on a number of festival lineups this year, which (fingers crossed) means more new music.
Sia, Diplo, & Labrinth (LSD) – “Heaven Can Wait”
LSD (aka Labrinth), Sia, and Diplo have been releasing music left and right since they announced their collaboration group. Their new track, “Heaven Can Wait,” is a power ballad that has me completely entranced. It is big and bold with vocals from Sia and Labrinth that is matched with Diplo’s production, which means this trio is only about to get better.
