The Drop – Kid Cudi, Kanye West, & Skrillex
The Drop is us cutting through the massive jungle of new music that’s been released over the last seven days. We sharpen our proverbial machetes and cut through the shit to get you to the content that you need to be listening to.
This is The Drop.
Kid Cudi & Kanye West – Kids See Ghosts
Kids See Ghosts is another album that is becoming one of my favorites of 2018 so far. It is the return of Cudi that I am excited for, and the Kanye that I absolutely love. While Kanye and Cudi never cease to amaze me on their individual music, the duo crushes it on every track together. Must listens from the album have to be: “Reborn,” “Kids See Ghosts,” and “Cudi Montage.”
Khalid & H.E.R. – “This Way”
R&B favorites, Khalid and H.E.R., have teamed up on a sultry new track for the soundtrack for the upcoming film, Superfly. Khalid can collaborate with just about anyone and it turn into magic, and the same goes for H.E.R. The two of them together make one of my favorite releases of this week.
Skrillex & Pendulum – “The Island, Pt. 1” (Dawn)
I instantly drool over anything new from Skrillex, but there is something extra special about his latest remix for me. It has been some time since we have seen anything close to “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites” era of Skrill, however, there are smudges of that sound smeared into this release as it also dubs into the likes of several genres of dance.
Jorja Smith – “Don’t Watch Me Cry”
Here is yet another track from Jorja Smith that I have fallen in love with, of course. I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, she is an artist that everyone needs to be listening to. There is a song for the likes of everyone, and she is a singer-songwriter R&B dream. Her album, Lost and Found, has just been released and needs to recognized for all the greatness that it is. Yet, “Don’t Watch Me Cry” has me feeling some type of way (more than anything else on the album).
Shawn Mendes – “Because I Had You”
Since his self-titled album came out, I have become quite the Shawn Mendes fan. His voice is so sincere, and I can’t get his songs out of my head. “Because I Had You” is an absolute hidden gem in the midst of his 14-track album. It strips back from his high-energy, pop sound and transitions him into a singer-songwriter that takes him to a whole new level of artistry.
Dagny – “Used To You”
Dagny is a really rad indie pop artist that I have recently stumbled upon. Her unique vocals keep her songs sounding new and fresh, while meshing into the sounds of current indie electro pop that I love. Her latest track, “Used To You,” is simple and endearing, and continues to be a stepping stone for her as a new rising pop artist.
Louis The Child & Wafia (Hotel Garuda Remix) – “Better Not”
Hotel Garuda has revamped Louis The Child’s latest release, and has given it even more flavor. “Better Not” is a song that I already can vibe along with, but it has gotten even more of a summertime groove to it, which is perfect for my beach day playlist. An easy-going and fun remix that I am here for all summer long.
