On Wax: Last Week in Hip-Hop
On Wax is a weekly take updating you on the pocket of culture known as hip-hop. We bring you everything from breaking news to album drops, jail time and who’s beefing with who.
Run of the Mill Trap Singles Galore
This week was full of some really unimaginative songs from a lot of different hip-hop artists: Belly dropped a DJ Mustard song featuring YG titled “4 Days.” If you’ve ever heard a Mustard produced track or a Belly track, you know what to expect. YG also appeared on a track with Trippie Redd, and Mozzy appeared on a track by King Chris titled “Bool;” the track is full of blood affiliated artists. While none of them really bring anything exciting, the track is bearable. K CAMP dropped a song with Moneybagg Yo called “Racks Like This;” how original. WizKid has a track with Chris Brown, Trey Songz and French Montana titled “Shabba.” A$AP Ferg already made that song, and it’s a million times better than this one. Lastly, KYLE dropped a track with Kehlani titled “Playwitme.” It’s probably the best song in the bunch as both artist perform well, although the instrumental is really lacking with the piano loop. It tried to take a left turn with the acoustic guitar, but the track overall falls flat. Of all these singles, however, none of them take the cake for worst songs of the week.
BlocBoy JB Runs Short on “Rover 2.0”
Fresh off his hot single, “Look Alive,” featuring Drake, BlocBoy JB returns with 21 Savage on a new song titled “Rover 2.0.” The song probably should have been called “Look Alive 2.0” sense the track follows the same formula, except lacks all the things that made “Look Alive” a good song. The piano chords over the trap percussion are stale when they’re looped and ultimately have no energy. BlocBoy brings absolutely no energy, which doesn’t help the already typically monotone 21. With the track running way longer than it should have, the OVO artist falls short of the momentum he received from “Look Alive.”
Thirty Seconds to Mars are Trap Now
You’re probably thinking, why is a rock band on a hip-hop article? Well, because Thirty Seconds to Mars are far gone from using actual instruments. Sounding more like a terrible mash-up of pop, EDM, future bass and trap, “One Track Mind” is easily the worst track of the week. Jared Leto has a terrible vocal performance, and 1:50 is a laughable moment if you’re having a bad day. Insult to injury is the ASAP Rocky feature. Lately, every time Rocky has done something, I get less excited for his next album. Every day we stray further away from God.
Flatbush Zombies Drop Some New Heat
The return of one of New York’s best rap groups, Flatbush Zombies are back in action. After dropping their single, “Headstone,” in February, they strike again with “U&I.” The beat produced by Eric Art Elliot is really interesting, while the trio spit. Meechy Darko specifically drops an amazing verse on the track, and it’s one not to be missed. Their sophomore album, Vacation In Hell, drops April 6th, and features artists like Joey Bada$$ and Denzel Curry.
Denzel Curry Leaves Rap?
It appears that Florida MC, Denzel Curry, is leaving the game indefinitely. On cryptic Instagram story posts and Tweets, he simply says bye and then continues on in another tweet about how he feels. This comes a day after Curry changes his profile picture to a snow covered forest with the caption: “I can’t stand a lot of shit.” Hopefully Denzel is okay, and he takes the all the time he needs to feel better. While fans are probably gutted, especially since his long awaited TABOO project is most likely not coming out, most understand (including myself). You can read the tweets below:

XXXTentacion squashes beef with Trippie Redd
After what had been one of the strangest cases in hip-hop of beef, XXXTentacion publicly apologized and sent love to artist Trippie Redd. This resulted in Trippie Redd returning the love and announcing the possibility of the two not only touring but dropping a tape together. The news couldn’t have come at a better time considering X was just granted the privilege of touring again by the judge for his case. Another interesting side to this is that it might lead to X and Ski closing the the beef they have as Ski Mask The Slump God acknowledged that X is making an effort to become a better person as he said in his apology to Trippie. However it ends, its still too much indirect speaking to one another.
Maxo Kream and Trill Sammy tour doc drops
No Jumper released a mini documentary on their tour which featured Houston artist Maxo Kream and Trill Sammy. The base of the tour was to raise money for the damages done in Houston by Hurricane Harvey. What makes this story better is that the funds go to an organization called Angel By Nature, which is run by none other than Houston Legend Trae Tha Truth. With so many different views of Hip Hop being depicted its good to see the change of pace where these same rappers are giving back for the better.
Until Next Time, It’s On Wax.
