On the Rise: The next generation of actors
Some of the big name actors we know of today started out when they were young, and have ruled Hollywood as they got older. Leonardo DiCaprio was 19 years old when he made his break in Hollywood with What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993), and was nominated for the Academy Award and Golden Globes for the first time for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. Soon after, DiCaprio landed major lead roles in features such as Titanic (1997), The Aviator (2004), The Departed (2006), and several more before finally snagging an Oscar for Best Actor in The Revenant (2015). Jennifer Lawrence was a huge success with the Hunger Games series at 21 in 2012, and her rise to stardom was solidified through her Oscar win as Best Actress the following year for Silver Linings Playbook (2013). Lawrence further is seen in Forbes list for the highest-paying actress and demand for in Hollywood.
With Lawrence and DiCaprio (as well as other once big named actors) starting to fade from the spotlight, who are the young actors that are making waves in Hollywood and would one day soon snag the next award? What actors should we keep an eye out for that could be the next DiCaprio or Lawrence? Here is my recommended list:
(Note: I will be focusing on actors 25 years and younger. However, I will say I really wanted to add John Boyega to this list.)
5. Finn Wolfhard (15 years old)
The teen actor, Finn Wolfhard, jumpstarted his career in Hollywood with his breakout role in the popular Netflix series Stranger Things. The 15-year-old actor also landed a feature role in the 2017 adaptation of Stephen King’s It. It is rumored that the sequel to It will feature Wolfhard as a younger version of Richie. Furthermore, Wolfhard isn’t only an aspiring actor, but apparently a musician as well with his band Calpurnia. Whether or not Wolfhard gains fame for his acting or music (maybe both) in the upcoming years, his demand and presence in the entertainment field will be one to look out for—especially when Stranger Things is completed.
Also, if you are curious about his band Calpurnia, here’s their latest release:
4. Letitia Wright (24 years old)
Letitia Wright is more famously known for her role as Shuri in the widely successful Marvel movie, Black Panther (2018). Her role as Shuri has inspired representation for young girls—especially young black girls. Her role as a 16-year-old black princess, a princess who subverts the stereotype by being a tech genius and a fiercely strong independent woman, as well as the mastermind behind the tech for Black Panther invigorates hope and joy for young girls of color. Letitia Wright will be featuring in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Shuri in the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War. She has also featured in Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One (2018). The British actress was even nominated for the British Independent Film Award (BIFA) for the Most Promising Newcomer for her role in Urban Hymn (2015). While Wright did not win the category, her outbreak success as Shuri brings her into the limelight of Hollywood. Letitia Wright is an actress to keep an eye out for.
3. Tom Holland (21 years old)
The reboot of Spider-Man became the perfect opportunity to bring Tom Holland in the spotlight of Hollywood. His capture of the youthful and nerdy quip of Spider-Man was teased in Captain America: Civil War in 2016, and further praised in the stand-alone feature Spider-Man: Homecoming the following year. The 21-year-old actor seems to be making big strides in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with his roles in Avengers: Infinity War and the 2019 sequel of Spider-Man. His role in the Marvel universe, much like Letitia Wright, has gained him media attention, however, it will certainly not limit him from future noteworthy movies outside of Marvel. Holland will also be featured alongside Daisy Ridley in the movie Chaos Walking that will be released in 2019. Tom Holland shows promise of being a contending big actor in Hollywood in the upcoming years.
2. Saoirse Ronan (23 years old)
Everyone most likely knows the name of Saoirse Ronan (but does not know how to pronounce it properly) after the sweeping Oscar nominations of her lead role in Lady Bird (2017). While Lady Bird has brought the young actress in the limelight of Hollywood, Ronan has had notable roles prior to the movie that got her nominated for Best Actress. She was in Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014), and acted in Joe Wright’s movies: Atonement (2007) and Hanna (2011). Ronan has been one of the young upcoming actresses to watch out for and should continue to be so. Saoirse Ronan is quickly on her way to receiving an Academy Award in the next few years, and Hollywood should be excited about what she will be starring in next.
1.Timothee Chalamet (22 years old)
Are you surprised? The 22-year-old actor starred in two movies that were nominated in the recent Academy Awards: Lady Bird (2017) and Call Me By Your Name (2017). He is praised more for his performance in Call Me By Your Name than his role in Lady Bird. However, his role in Lady Bird alongside contending young big actor, Saoirse Ronan, is entertaining nonetheless. His performance in Call Me By Your Name is breathtaking, and captures the pains of youth and love. Chalamet perfectly encapsulates the emotion and depth of his character in Call Me By Your Name in the last scene of the movie—a scene that he is highly praised for. Timothee Chalamet continues the ride to being Hollywood’s next big actor with his lead role in the anticipated Hot Summer Nights that will be released on July 27, 2018 and distributed by A24. It wouldn’t be a surprise if Chalamet snagged an Oscar by next year, and if he doesn’t, he will surely receive one in the next five.
